Triathlon training in Antwerp: where to swim, ride and run
Three disciplines, one city. Where to swim, cycle and run in Antwerp to prepare for your first triathlon or your next Ironman.
Training for a triathlon asks something a runner or cyclist never has to face: you have to keep three sports going at once, each in the right place and at the right moment. The good news is that Antwerp is surprisingly well suited to it. Pools, long cycling roads just outside the city, and parks and quays to run on all sit close together.
Here's where to swim, ride and run in Antwerp to get ready, whether it's your first sprint triathlon or a full Ironman.
Swimming: from the pool to open water
For most triathletes the swim is the toughest discipline, and it's also the first one in the race. Come out of the water strong and you start the bike with a smile.
- In the pool you build technique and volume. Antwerp has several pools, including the Wezenberg and the pool on Veldstraat, where our swim sessions take place among others.
- In open water you get used, as the season nears, to swimming without lane lines, walls and a black line on the bottom. That's a skill in itself: sighting, swimming in a group, dealing with colder water.
Can't swim front crawl smoothly yet? Then start with the basics. In our adult swimming lessons in Antwerp you learn front crawl from scratch or refine your technique, and as the season approaches you join the club's open water swim sessions.
Cycling: out of the city for your long rides
The bike is where you clock the most volume, so you want safe roads where you can keep riding for a long time.
- In the city and along the Scheldt you do easy technique, recovery and paceline rides.
- Outside the city lies your terrain for the long rides: the polders on the Left Bank, the dykes along the Scheldt and the quieter roads towards the Kempen. That's where you build endurance and can work purposefully in your zones.
A power meter helps make those rides more targeted, but it isn't a requirement to get started. What matters more is that your training load matches your plan.
Running: parks, quays and the track
The run finishes your triathlon, often on tired legs. That's why every triathlete also trains running on its own.
- Long steady runs you do along the Scheldt quays or in the Rivierenhof.
- Intervals belong somewhere flat and controlled, like the athletics track or a fixed park loop.

The art is in the split
The difference between grinding and progressing rarely comes down to a single discipline. It's in how you split swimming, cycling and running across your week, and how you match that to your goal race and your life. Too much of one always comes at the cost of another.
That's why we start our triathlon coaching in Antwerp with a lactate test per discipline, to fix your zones, and build your schedule around your calendar. That way the three sports reinforce each other instead of overloading your week.
Not a fan of training alone?
Keeping three disciplines going on your own is tough. In the HYTX community you train together: track sessions, social rides and open water swims, with people who understand why you get up at 6am. Antwerp has everything you need to become a triathlete. We help you put it all together.
